Iceland's Blue Lagoon exists because of an accident. In 1976, wastewater from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant began pooling in a lava field, creating a milky-blue reservoir rich in silica, algae, and minerals. Workers bathed in the runoff and reported softer skin.
By 1987, the pool had become a formal bathing facility, and by 1992, a dedicated company was managing what would become one of the most visited sites in Iceland.
The lagoon sits on the Reykjanes Peninsula, twenty kilometers from Keflavík International Airport and forty-seven kilometers southwest of Reykjavík. Its opalescent water, maintained at 37–39°C year-round, draws over a million visitors annually. The color comes from suspended silica particles that reflect visible light; the minerals—silica, algae, and trace sulfur—are credited with therapeutic effects, though the lagoon markets itself as a wellness destination rather than a medical spa. The surrounding basalt formations, black and porous, date from eruptions 800 years ago. Steam rises continuously, even in summer.
The Blue Lagoon operates across three entry tiers: Comfort, Premium, and Retreat Spa. The Comfort package, priced at 99 USD, includes lagoon access, towel rental, a silica mud mask, and one drink. Premium and Retreat tiers add robes, slippers, reservations at the on-site restaurant, and access to private changing suites. All tiers share the same lagoon water. The facility has expanded four times since 2000, adding a lava restaurant, a subterranean spa, and a luxury hotel built into the surrounding rock. Despite its scale, the lagoon retains a remote character—treeless horizons, geothermal steam vents, and the hum of the Svartsengi plant's turbines in the distance.
Transportation logistics define the Blue Lagoon's appeal to international visitors. Its proximity to Keflavík makes it a practical first or last stop for travelers on tight schedules. One-way transfers accommodate arrivals who want to bathe before heading to Reykjavík; roundtrip options serve city-based tourists. Most buses depart hourly from the airport's lower-level bus terminal and from designated pickup points in Reykjavík. The drive takes forty minutes from the capital, twenty from the airport. Booking transfers alongside entry tickets eliminates the need for rental cars or taxi fare, which can exceed 100 USD each way.
